(John Chapter 1, verses 31-32)

 

31わたしはこの方(かた)を知(し)らなかった。だが，この理(り)由(ゆう)でわたしは水(みず)でバプテスマを施(ほどこ)しに来(き)た。すなわち，この方(かた)がイスラエルに示(しめ)されるためだ」。

32ヨハネは証(しょう)言(げん)して言(い)った，「わたしは，霊(れい)がハトのように天(てん)から下(くだ)って，この方(かた)の上(うえ)にとどまるのを見(み)た。

Grammar Points

 

·       The wordだがmeans "but" or "however" and is used at the beginning of a sentence

·       に in the pattern水でバプテスマを施しに来たindicates purpose and means "to do something", "in order to do something". So水でバプテスマを施しに来た would be translated as "I came (in order) to baptize with water."  This pattern is formed by taking the "masu" stem of the verb followed by に and a verb of motion such as 行く, 走る, etc.

·       In the sentence この方の上にとどまるのを見た, adding の makes a "noun equivalent" from a sentence. In this case a nominalized sentence is used as the direct object of the verb見た.

Translation

 

31 I didn't know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel.

32 John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.
